   i actually constructed a hash simulater using your hash table algorithm
   and generated histograms demonstrating that the algorithm degenerates
   when increasing -stat over about 8000.

   mike stolarchuk suggested this might be happening, so i built a small
   program to demonstrate that it was for both -stat and -dstat.
