OK, forget Legato. I just found out it costs a fortune
(read: as much as the new DLT tape changer we're buying).

Our vendor also suggested Cheyenne ArcServe and UMD's Amanda (free)
as possible alternatives. At first glance of the web page neither
of these appears to know AFS-speak.

But Brian Spolarich's suggestion for iterating vos dump over the
vldb seems like an interesting solution. According to the article
from Douglas Mee, that seems to be the approach taken in the Box
Hill software. One thing I wonder about this approach is how you
handle restores. How do you keep track of the location of each
volume? Write an entry to a log file as each tape is written?

Has anyone tried this or another approach to backing up afs with
ArcServe, Amanda, or something else a bit more affordable than
Networker?
