I agree that there is a lot to be gained. It definitely makes upgrading a
cpu easy. However, one of the foundations for why AFS and DFS are easy to
manage is the ability for servers to come and go without impacting the user
community. To have multiple servers all depend on a single (complex)
subsystem is to give up some of that administrative freedom.
I made the choice (what I now call a mistake) once to configure multiple
fileservers sharing one of these fancy multi-host standalone raid disk
systems. It worked just fine until the controller had a problem... at which
point both fileservers died. [ I don't remember the details of the actual
problem, and I won't name the vendor. (It wasn't HDS.) However, it was the
sort of thing that could happen to almost any hardware raid box -- as I
recall it was a firmware bug. ]

Yes... and to implement this virtual disk there is special dedicated hardware
and custom software. It's not as simple as a real disk. It may or may not
be more reliable than a real disk.. it depends on the implementation.

One of the problems with Mainframes was/is the fact that as you pile more
eggs into that basket, it makes it harder and harder to update low-level
subsystems -- such as the disk system. It also forces outages to be
scheduled to do these updates/upgrades. In the distributed case, it can be
arranged for other servers to take over. When do you get a chance to update
the microcode in the (single) raid subsystem? Mainframes measure change in
years, partially for this reason.
