The xstat (eXtended STATisitics) library you noticed allows you to gather this
type of information. It is documented (sparsely) in the document:
/afs/grand.central.org/doc/afs/specs/xstat/xstat-ispec.tex
(PostScript version is available, but I found it better to run the TeX file
through our local version.)
This documentation should give you enough information to use the xstat library
provided with the AFS-3 distribution.
I've used this locally for monitoring file servers and detecting cache manager
problems. If you'd like some programming examples using the xstat library (the
doc doesn't provide any), let me know.
