I found your request for hints on international research
projects using AFS.
There are a number of Network of Excellence in Europe and
one of them working with distributed systems is esablishing
an infrastructure for its internal communication based
on AFS. The network of excellence is called CaberNet and
I believe that it is also responsible to establish the
support even for the other Networks.

which even seems rather close to you.
