ASSIGNING PREFERENCES
When initially assigning preferences, the Cache Manager bases the ranks on
IP addresses, rather than on actual physical considerations such as
location or distance. It calculates file server machine ranks according
to the following heuristic:
:
:
* If the client machine is in a subnet, all file server machines
in the same subnet as the client machine receive an initial
rank of 20000.
* All file server machines in the same network as the client machine
receive an initial rank of 30000.

I am wondering if "subnet" means something other than what I think it means...
% ifconfig ln0
ln0: 129.186.140.1 netmask ffffff00
flags=0x463<DYNPROTO,RUNNING,NOTRAILERS,BROADCAST,UP>
% fs getserverp
afsro-4.iastate.edu 20004
afsro-3.iastate.edu 20011
afsro-2.iastate.edu 20000
afsro-1.iastate.edu 20001
afsro-5.iastate.edu 15007 (manually set)
fs-8.iastate.edu 20012
fs-7.iastate.edu 20002
fs-6.iastate.edu 20008
Server IP addresses are:
afsro-4.iastate.edu 129.186.164.164
afsro-3.iastate.edu 129.186.163.163
afsro-2.iastate.edu 129.186.162.162
afsro-1.iastate.edu 129.186.161.161
afsro-5.iastate.edu 129.186.165.165
fs-8.iastate.edu 129.186.158.158
fs-7.iastate.edu 129.186.157.157
fs-6.iastate.edu 129.186.156.156
As you can see the client is in subnet 140, and none of the
servers are in that subnet, so why are they all 20000ish
rather than 30000ish?
This is not a huge problem we just need to set the close
one to 15000 rather than 25000 like we had planned, but
I was curious...
