You might want to take a look at the system we use at CMU to deal with
some of the problems you describe. We have developed several tools
(depot, ADM, EMT) and a set of procedures to allow developers to work
independently and still provide a stable released environment.
Just FTP to export.acs.cmu.edu. There are some slides and a paper under
pub/SoftMgmt. Additionally there is a pub/depot directory which has the
depot software and a paper on depot which was presented at the last
LISA. Adm is also available, and can be used to grant specific
privledges to specific users for a specific set of volumes without
issuing an admin token. EMT, the tool which oversees all of the volume
create/replicate/release/unreplicate/delete operations for software in
our environment, will be there sometime in December but the good
documentation won't appear until January.
