If your running kernel (i.e. boot logical volume which is 
created by the bosboot command), does not match your current
/unix, you could see problems like you describe.  I can't
explain why it works when you remove the cache though.  It
is possible the during the process of applying the PTFs which
moved you up to AIX 3.2.2, a bosboot invocation failed, or
your /unix was corrupted.  It seems unlikely that this would
happen on 20 machines unless you got a really bad PTF.  It
might be worth comparing /unix on some of the machines which
are of the same configuration.
