The source to xdm is available... we've hacked our copy all to pieces
(in fact, ours now exec()s our custom /bin/login so that we keep our
X-logins and telnet/r/decnet-logins consistent). Our /bin/login does
all the groovy stuff (i.e., "aklog" and setpag() for AFS).
