Can someone comment on the performance impact of making a volume read only? The data under consideration is the mach 3.0 kernel sources, which are shadowed for builds (which last several hours) by as many as 20 or 30 people. The sources consist of in excess of 1200 files, including tons of header files that are open very frequently. The rate of incremental rebuilds is essentially limited by stat() performance.
