TRANSARC AND CONTROL DATA ANNOUNCE MARKETING AGREEMENT
Arden Hills, MN, January 26, 1993 - Control Data Systems, Inc. and Transarc
Corporation have entered into an OEM agreement that gives Control Data
exclusive rights to resell Transarc's AFS (TM) distributed file system on
Control Data's 4000 Series InfoServers (TM).
"There was significant demand from our customers to support AFS on Control
Data Systems' hardware," said Philip L. Lehman, Transarc's director of file
systems marketing. "We were pleased that we were able to work successfully
with Control Data to make the product available. We expect Control Data to
be a major integrator of AFS."
Transarc's AFS 3 file system product is in use at over 300 sites worldwide.
AFS is a global file system, providing a user with seamless access to files
anywhere on a worldwide network. Because of network transfer techniques and
client caching mechanisms, AFS delivers excellent performance, even in large,
wide-area configurations. Other key attributes of AFS include sophisticated
management tools, on-line backup, and stringent security with Kerberos-based
authentication and access control lists.
"Control Data's solutions in the file serving, backup, and archiving areas
are greatly enhanced by the capability to offer Transarc's AFS," said Tim
Donaldson, director of Control Data's storage management group. "We have
already integrated and delivered hierarchical storage management capabilities
with AFS. This offers users the benefits of an AFS server with a variety of
large-capacity, low-cost robotic storage devices. The integration of AFS into
Control Data's storage management solutions paves the way for adopting future
technology from OSF/DCE."
Transarc Corporation offers software products for distributed computing
within open systems environments. The fast-growing distributed computing
segment is a decentralized approach utilizing smaller, more powerful computers
and removing the single point of failure that exists in most mainframe systems.
The Open Software Foundation (OSF), a standards organization for open systems
computing, has adopted Transarc technology as part of its Distributed Computing
Environment (DCE).
Control Data Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: CDAT) integrates high-performance
computer solutions for technical markets and for managing large, complex
databases and communications networks for government and commercial markets.
The company is located in Arden Hills, Minnesota and does business in 40
countries worldwide.
