Only one directory can be mounted per afsd, and the afsd can only be
started once per system boot. (And, yes, a restartable afsd is on our
list of top requests.)
The Apollo afs client can be killed and restarted as many times as you like.
And since it (like all file system types in Domain/OS) runs in user mode,
you can even run your favorite symbolic debugger on it (assuming your
favorite symbolic debugger is dde).
Being able to shut it down gracefully also means that you can skip the cache
scan unless afsd dies unnaturally. This has cut the afsd startup time down
