    There is no straightforward means of doing this prior to AFS 3.3.
    You would have to identify some feature which was added in a particular
    release and test for its existence (or absence).

        The best thing I find  useful is to check the size and date on 
a particular file such as '/usr/vice/etc/afsd' or '/usr/vice/etc/afs.ext'.
It always works for me.
