We've identified the problem for the crashing suns, but are still
unsure as to why its happening. The problem has to do with the
setserverprefs command.
Currently, we have a perl script that is invoked from rc.afs, which
gets the current list of afs servers, and based on the standard
heuristic (AFS Command Ref, fs setserverprefs command), generates a
rank which it assigns to each fileserver. The fs setserverprefs
command is then invoked using the -servers flag.
Here's the strange part. If the script is invoked manually after the afsds are
started (i.e. not in rc.afs), everything comes up wonderfully, and no
crash occurs if/when cd'ing to any afs directory. If invoked from
rc.afs, the problem reoccurs. I've been able to reproduce this
behavior at least 5 times.
To eliminate the possibility of the script itself having a problem, I
hard coded the preferences in rc.afs, using the fs setserverprefs
command directly from there. This still results in a crash when
cd'ing to afs directories. I've also tried using the -file flag (and
a file) with identical results.
Note: in both cases (running from rc.afs and running the script manually),
the fs getserverprefs command returns the appropriate list of servers and their ranks.
