I have a customer who is trying to copy files from an NFS filesystem
to AFS.  Other important aspects of this of this copy are that the
total amount of data is on the order of 1.5GB split.  (The
distribution is basically a large number of relatively small files.
Actually, the data is an Operating System build image).

Presently, the customer is using a shell script wrapper around "cp -r".
(I realize that this is probably the worst possible approach due to things
like interpretive overhead and the fact that cp does absolutely no buffering
to my knowledge).

Anyway, the total transfer time of this process is rather important.
(We're talking about a process that presently takes over 10 hours!)
I've suggested using "find ... | cpio" or "tar -cvf- ... | (cd ....;
tar -xvf-) in order to inject some buffering.  (I used both the
"stock" OS and GNU versions of these utilities).  However, I'm smart
enough to know that other NFS and AFS factors come into play here.

Consequently, I am open to any resonable suggestions or advice.  But,
I'm looking for any way to shave off addition time (I know I won't be
able to cover everything!)
