I have an application which spends a lot of time transferring files from directory to directory. The directories sometimes reside on the same volume, most of the time they do not. The application, most of the time, really doesn't care about the data, but knows where, when and what files should be transferred. The result is that a client machine ends up fetching all of the AFS file data across the network, and then storing that data back to AFS, another transfer across the network. Sometimes that data transfer can cross multiple rings - in fact it sometimes can go across sites in different states. This results because the AFS Cell is in one state, but the client machine is in another. So my question: Is there a operation I can perform to tell AFS that I want to transfer a file from one directory to another, however I don't need or want the data to be cached on the client machine? Rather, I want the AFS servers to transfer the data amongst themselves as appropriate (likely on the same ring) and let me know the completion.
