We're going to be doing a major remodeling of our cell and wanted to get
some opinions on a relevant topic. I will have the opportunity to redo
every partition on the cell and would like to make sure I get as much
available space as possible.
All our servers are Sun Sparcs (most running SunOS 4.1.1 and two new ones
running Solaris 2.2). Currently, when I add new partitions to the cell, I
use the command
newfs -i 4096 -m 5 /dev/????
to create the filesystems. This allocates half as many inodes as usual and
only reserves 5% of the partition for the system as opposed to 10%. Our
disks are on the order of almost 2G so this adds up to a significant amount
of space over the defaults. The servers are dedicated and do not run as
clients and do not contain any user accounts.
How do other sites create the filesystems for AFS? Is there really any
reason to reserve any space (maybe just 1%)?
