Should be FAQ: which box for server?

I'm in the enviable position of actually having money (for once) to replace
our aging (and ailing) RT file servers - what boxen are folks finding most
cost effective?  The current RTs are only serving 1.5GB on 5 spindles - I'd
like to keep the spindle count up (for marginally better throughput?), but
I can't get carried away with cost....
