We use DECathena Kerberos/aklog, so we'd envisage authenticating from a srvtab
file.

We have only one tape stacker on an AFS server at the moment, which leads to
me to consider what happens when a volume must be restored - it's backup tape
must be loaded into the stacker (we have no compatible single-slot, i.e,
non-stacker drive), manually selected and then used for the restore during the
day. Obviously, we want nightly incremental backups to happen as normal. Is
this likely to cause a problem?

I'd be interested in an advance copy.
