Hi,

I'm looking for comments on the feasibility of using RAID arrays
or similar "protected storage" with AFS file servers. I've looked
through the old info-afs messages, and I've found two previous
discussions on this topic.

The first was a general "can it be done?" question like mine, from
October 1992. The answer then was that the SAS folks were using RAID 5
arrays on HPs with no problems. The second was a more philosophical
discussion from last June about how RAID writes are too slow and RAID
would be best suited for read-only applications. But I can replicate
most of the stuff that I would classify read-only, and get higher
availability without forking over the dough for a RAID controller or two.

Is anyone currently using RAID arrays on their AFS servers? If so,
did you have to do any afs tweaking, or was it plug and play? And are you
satisfied with the performance you're getting? Any server configuration you
can give, platform, os, afs version, drive sizes, RAID controller manufacturer,
enclosure manufacturer, etc. would be great.

Thanks,
