Unfortunately, AFS does not handle sparse files. We had a problem
when we installed Sun's Answerbook utility in AFS and replicated it.
The inital install on a read/write partition filled it to only 48%,
while the replicated partitions (of the same size) filled to 104%.

I have formally put an RFE (Request for Enhancement) into TransArc to
handle sparse files in their next version of AFS (3.4). I suggest
that you do the same. I'm sure if enough customers ask for it, then
it will be in the next release.
