Package is a very useful utility, but it also has quite a few
places that you can shoot yourself in the foot.

I am looking for a front-end to package that will have similar
features to the following:

        - Facilitate editing the pacakge files, and take out the
requirement of having to manually make the package files.
At the same time providing some type of file locking to prevent
        overwriting of someone elses modifications.

        - Provide a framework around package so that multiple admins
could be updating the package description files while still
maintaing a consistent style and/or structure.

        - Perform error checking before promoting changes such
as adding new files to be served by package. For example:
check AFS and make sure that the source file does exist.
Possibly check to local filesystem to make sure that your
path is the real path, not a link pointing to the
real path. (This can inadvertently delete a link that points
to a real directory, such as /bin -> /usr/bin on AIX).
        etc....

If anyone has heard of such a program or has already developed one
I would like to hear about it. If there is not one in existence, is
there a desire in the package community for such a program?
What other type of features would you like to see in one?

Thanks
