I think you have the tail wagging the dog.  The find command is what
needs to be modified to keep it from descending into AFS space; not AFS. 

Anyway, the best solution (IMHO) is something very close to what Joseph
and others offered: 

    find / \! -fstype 4.2 -prune -o -name core -atime +7 -exec rm -f {} \; 

This has the advantage that its behavior on non-AFS systems should be
identical to the behavior of the crontab entry shipped with SunOS.
