We are running an application from Parametric Technologies Corporation
(PTC) called Pro/PDM. This is a data management application that works
closely with Pro/Engineer files. We have been running both Pro/E and
Pro/PDM from AFS -- binaries and data. About two months ago we
installed a new version of Pro/PDM which incorporated the use of remote
procedure calls instead of rcp to move files around on the network.

Lately, we have had some really strange problems with Pro/PDM and the
data stored in its databases. PTC says they don't support AFS and that
AFS is most likely what is causing our problems. They suggest that we
move our data and binaries back to NFS -- yuk! This would be a giant
step backward for us and I find it hard to believe that we would have
fewer problems with NFS than with AFS. On the other hand I know
absolutely nothing about rpc's and how they are programmed. Is it
possible that an application can be written to use remote procedure
calls that somehow do not work in harmony with AFS? If so, how can we
go about determining if this is our problem?

Has anyone else had problems getting applications and their data to
work well in an AFS environment?

Any help or information would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Hope Goering
