I wish to thank those of you who responded to my previous email inquiry
about problems with getting an Exabyte 8500c to operate properly on
a sparc 5 running Solaris 2.3 and AFS 3.x. The problem was definitely not
AFS and was solved by adding the following entry to /kernel/drv/st.conf:

# Entry for the Exabyte EXB-8500C 8mm tape drive #
tape-config-list =
        "EXABYTE EXB8500C", "Exabyte 8MM EXB8500C", "EXBT-8CC";
         EXBT-8CC = 1,0x35,1024,0x0239,4,0x14,0x15,0x90,0x8c,3;

The above st.conf entry is slightly different than that which was originally
given to me by Exabyte on Friday last week. In particular, 0x0239 is being
used instead of 0x0039 which has the effect of turning on the ST_KNOWS_EOD
feature in addition to the ST_VARIABLE, ST_BSF, ST_BSR, and ST_LONG_ERASE
options.

Futhermore, the 4 density modes have been rearranged according to convention
(thanks to Chuck Barrett at Exabyte). The default density is also set at
8500c mode instead of 8200 mode.

I've tested this out and it works great. I've also contacted technical support
at Exabyte about the discrepancies. Hopefully, the external docs provided by
Exabyte will be updated accordingly.

Once again, thanks to those who kindly responded to my plea for help.

Sincerely,
Steven McElwee
