I would not claim that there can't be any patch dependencies in AFS, however
the last time I had a problem with ka_UserAuthenticateGeneral() which worked
on some machines and not on others it turned out in the end that the call was
*missing one parameter* which was then interpreted randomly depending on the
stack contents. 

A typical call (out of *our* xdm hack) is:

ka_UserAuthenticateGeneral(KA_USERAUTH_VERSION +
                                       KA_USERAUTH_DOSETPAG,
                                       greet->name, 0, 0, greet->password,
                                       0, &password_expires, 0, &reason )

Might be worth counting how many '0's your call actually passes.
