We've had trouble with this as well, and have come to a different (and perhaps
obvious) workaround. We put a version of /etc/rc.afs on each machine during
install which starts afsd without the '-verbose' flag during configuraion.
This gets replaced the first time that package runs, but we found that the
setup of the cache takes ~20% as long this way...
