We're just in the process of putting it up into our production environment
so our experiences are somewhat limited. I recommend that you ask Box Hill
for an evaluation copy to try it out yourself.

One question that AFS folks usually have with this product is to explain the
process by which the ACL metadata is saved and restored.

VOSASM backs up and restores complete AFS volumes, not individual files or
directories. VOSASM does this by invoking the 'vos dump' and 'vos restore'
commands provided with AFS. ACLs, AFS mount points, and other filesystem
information is encoded in the output stream produced by 'vos dump'.

Each volume dumpfile appears as a single file in the Networker online index,
owned and readable only by root, so it is not possible for anyone but root
to restore a volume. VOSASM runs with root privileges on the client (as
do all other Legato ASMs, including the default uasm) and uses the '-localauth'
switch with the vos commands it invokes; thus VOSASM does not require any
AFS tokens to dump and restore volumes.

So far our experiences have been positive. I would like to see this
ported to support DFS. If others out there agree, please share it with the folks
at Box Hill since they are willing to do it but not until there is a large enough
demand.

Cheers,
