OK, we assume that you have successfully pinged from
one of your IBM RISC System/6000 AIX AFS servers
to one of the new clients and vice versa.

Ergo, you have the network connectivity but you just
can't start access /afs/@cell/?

If so, try rebooting one of your new Linux clients _without_ starting AFS.
Delete and re-create the cache directory (or, better, filesystem).

Then try:
    /etc/rc.d/init.d/afs start

I can tell you, Transarc's AFS 3.6 client on RedHat Linux 6.2
accessing RS6K AIX AFS servers works every day for me.
