This note is to update you on the status of the availability of Open AFS.
We realize that many of you are anxiously awaiting the release of the Open
AFS code. We are very pleased to see the level of interest in Open AFS
among the community! As I said in my note to you in August, we are in the
process of preparing the AFS code so that it can be opened up to the
community. Since this is a very large product, the code cleanup process
has been very time consuming. Here is the status:

1) We have created a directory in the IBM DeveloperWorks Open Source Zone,
which can be accessed via:
http://oss.software.ibm.com/developerworks/opensource/afs.
2) Today, we are providing you with the AFS Documentation files.
3) We expect to have the Open AFS source code available by the third week
in October. We are committed to making the AFS code available to you as
soon as possible.

On a related note, I would like to introduce the first five Open AFS
Advisory Board members:

Name Affiliation
Derrick Brashear Carnegie Mellon University
Craig Everhart IBM
Peter Honeyman University of Michigan
Ted McCabe MIT
Laura Stentz IBM

The charter members of the board will be meeting in late October to further
define the organizational structure for Open AFS, possible working groups,
how the board and community will work together, etc. In addition, we will
consider adding 2-3 additional board members to the team. We will update
you on the results of this board meeting.

Thank you for your continued interest in AFS!

Laura
