As long as you're *sure* that the process that created the lock
is dead, you can just delete the lock file/directory manually.

That would seem pretty safe, but since it's client/server, check
first that the server process isn't still lingering around. If
it is, kill it (NOT "kill -9") and see if it cleans up the locks
on its way out. (This situation is pretty unlikely, but there
have been cases reported in the past; and checking for it
couldn't hurt :-)
