Right.  I had this much.  What I couldn't figure out was how the 
check-crlf script could read the file.  What I learned was that, 
although the first argument to check-crlf is a directory name, you 
_don't_ look in that directory to find the files to open; you just 
assume them to be in the current working directory where your script 
is running.  Naturally, _after_ I learned that, I got your mail, and 
saw that your Perl script did it right.

Well, I don't want to start a religious war here, but we find it 
useful to check in binary files to CVS, even though the text-based 
features don't apply to them (.doc, .gif, etc).  In certain 
well-defined cases, we even commit compiled output (.class, .jar).  I 
won't go into why; I don't want to upset anyone.  It works for us, 
and we're happy.
