I guess we do closest to #1, I guess.  The builds 
are run periodically and automatically. We do a fresh 
"cvs rtag" + "cvs checkout" rather than an export...
But not  for any real reason.  (though the build scripts 
look once in one of the "CVS" directories to get the 
tag, but that's not a real reason, as it could be
(shoudl be) done other ways.  We also build 
on multiple  platforms.  We handle that in the 
simplest way possible, by doing multiple 
checkouts.
