Greetings:

I've started working on a project which has an existing CVS tree on a
Solaris box into which I can SSH from my NT PC (using PuTTY). I got
WinCVS 1.06 and set preferences

Authentication == SSH server

and

CVSROOT == :ext:<myID>@<server>:<path>

since when I SSH into <server> and cd to <path> I can see the CVSROOT
directory underneath. (If this is probably incorrect, please let me
know--we're somewhat undersupported here :-)

When I run WinCVS|CVS Admin|Login, I get the message

> Set the password authentication first in the preferences !

which is set as above. When I try to checkout, I get

> cvs [checkout aborted]: cannot start server via rsh: No such file or
> directory

Which seems fair enough, since I haven't told WinCVS how to call SSH.
Which raises some other questions:

* How do I tell WinCVS how to call SSH?

* Do I need a command-line SSH? I know I can start PuTTY from the
  command line: will that suffice?

While I'm here:

* Is there a WinCVS FAQ? I've looked at its help, but didn't see
  anything relevant. Is there a FM I should R ?-)

* Is there a comp.software.config-mgmt FAQ? I searched for one, but
  didn't see anything.

Please post to me as well as to the list/group, if possible. TIA,
