You do lose performance, but I think Samba is particularly slow.  The
ratio that I've heard for AFS repositories vs. client-server is more in
the range of a factor of two or three times slower for the AFS repository
(this from sites with large development work going on in CVS).  For me,
the ease of administration gained by not having to handle client-server
more than makes up for that, since we don't do tons of heavy tagging and
branching.  YMMV.
