I can't reproduce this, but I suspect I know what the problem is.  Could
you please try rerunning that command as follows:

        CVS_CLIENT_LOG=/tmp/cvslog cvs -d 
:pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/usr/local/cvshome init

and then send the contents of /tmp/cvslog.in.
