modules with lots of files

Is there a common method for specifying large numbers of individual
files in a module, or perhaps a patch that allows for inclusion of
another file which lists the necessary components of a module?  I need
to be able to list several thousand files in a module, and can not
simply recurse a directory because some files may belong to another
logical set.
