It seems the "-d ." trick only works in my case if you when I'm logged into
the box contains the CVS repository.
When I try it from another unix box pointing my $CVSROOT to the other box, I
get:
>cvs export -r HEAD -d . Project/Subproject
cvs export: existing repository /home/dir/ROOT does not match /home/dir/RO
OT/Project/Subproject
cvs export: ignoring module Project/Subproject
It worked OK locally however.

Not necessarily; if you want to export into the current directory, just
say so:
cvs export -r HEAD -d . a/b/c/d
