FYI, I solved this by simply copying the files back into the directory
(after doing a checkout, which gave me the directory structure and CVS
files) and ran 'find' with 'xargs' and 'cvs add', which gave me messages
like 're-adding in place of dead branch 1.x', and then committed.
BTW, is there any reasin 'cvs add' should not have a directory-recurse
feature?
