CVS error: not as 'root'

        I'm going nuts!  I'm running CVS under BeOS.  I can everything, but 
hwne I try to commit files, I get this message

        $ cvs commit
        cvs [commit aborted]: cannot commit files as 'root' 

        Any ideas?  I've tried everything....checked permissions and so on.  I 
need to at least know what the error means...
