I'm not 100% sure that even this "trick" will give you the kind of locks
you will need in order to interact properly with a non-CVS repository.

The only correct solutions in your scenario will be to continue to use
this "Sniff" thing and either install it on your lab machines or arrange
for them to access shared storage where stuff can be checked out on
their behalf.
