When using client/server CVS, -z causes all communication between the
client and the server to be gzipped using the specified compression
level. Higher levels usually give better compression, but use more CPU
time -- 6 is generally reguarded as being a good tradeoff.

As an example, on my machine, checking out one set of source files
without -z (or with -z0) takes about .05s CPU time and sends 1MB from
the server to the client. With -z6, it takes about 1.45s but only sends
260kB. If you have a slow link, that can make a significant difference.
