Problem with cvs

Is it possible to update a cvs tree which hasn't got the CVS 
directories?
ie:
I've got the X4.01 source from a CD.
When i run cvs update or checkout on it, it tries to download all the 
files from the beginning. I cannot do this since I have a 28800 
connection. 

Is it possible just to get the CVS directories from a branch ie:xc401?
