I've seen something like this using samba to access a repository on a
remote machine.  The problem seemed to be a symptom of the operations
samba would and wouldn't allow across the share.  I ended up switching to
pserver after a couple of hours of trying to figure out samba config
files and realizing that if I DID find the answer I was going to have a
hell of a time persuading the sysadmin team that the settings should be
changed.
