Branching

I'm having a problem with branches.

I have branches running off a working copy.
How can you move between the branches?
The cvs documentation talks about switching changes to other branches using
(cvs update -r <branchname> module) which works fine, but how do you switch
to work on another branch without taking changes over to it.
Basically, I need the branches to be separate lines of development.
Can anyone help, or think of a better way to do this?
