Using an IP adresss to connect to a CVS repository

Hi Folks

IS it possible to use an IP address instead of the machine name to
connect to, ie something like

cvs -d :pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/usr/local/cvsroot project1 login

I have tried the above and it dosent seem to work.  Am I doing something
a little wrong or is this just not possible?
