That happens if the file was deleted off a branch and not the main trunk.  That
might be what you saw and that's the way it's supposed to work.  Are you using the
most current released version of CVS (1.11)?  I believe there were some bugs along
this line that have been fixed in 1.11.  There are Linux RPMs as well as source
and other binaries posted on http://CVSHome.org if you need them.
