Empty Directories and Tags

Hi,
It seems that empty directories are not checked out when you checkout using
the -r option to specify a tag.  Is this a known bug or feature?  Any
workaround available?

Apologies if this is a known issue, I couldn't find it mentioned in the
documentation.
