Run "cvs -n update" in the work directory, and eventually grep out what you
want.

cvs -n update 2>&1 | grep "^C " 
... will find all files with conflicts,

cvs -n update 2>&1 | grep "^U "
... will find all files that needs to be updated,

cvs -n update 2>&1 | grep "^M "
... will find all files that are changed and might need to be committed to
the repository,

etc.
