Yes, nearly everyone uses CVS without Kerberos, which is why no one noticed the autoconf problems that caused your difficulty (they've been fixed in the current development version for some time). What you're giving up is the ability to use the "Direct connection with GSSAPI" and "Direct connection with kerberos" methods of connecting to a remote repository: <http://www.cvshome.org/docs/manual/cvs_2.html#SEC26>.
